State Champions Again!!!
JA Tops Prep 2-1 For Girls Soccer Title
The Lady Raiders were sitting at an even 6-6 record after back to back losses to Hartfield Academy and St. Agnes (TN) in mid September. Then things started to turn around. They won their last game in the Collierville Rivals Classic over Bartlett, TN and then two days later on senior night JA found a way to play one of their best games of the season in a 1-0 defeat of Jackson Prep. They used that momentum to win their final three conference games of the season to lock up the #2 seed and a first round bye in the playoffs. In the semifinals at The Brickyard last week they used a second half surge to defeat Hartfield 2-0 to earn a spot in the Championship Game for the seventh straight year against Jackson Prep.
The game began with an early offensive mindset by Jackson Prep, but they were unable to get anything by senior Goalkeeper Ava Antonaros in the first half. With time winding down in the first forty minutes, Izzy Scott found a loose ball and scored from nearly 30 yards out to give JA the early 1-0 advantage. In the second half, JA was able to stretch their lead as Ella King stole a ball deep in Prep territory and found Aubrey Edmonson open for the 2-0 advantage. Less than a minute later, Prep responded with a goal from Claire Crosby to make it 2-1. The Lady Raiders played superb on both sides of the ball for the remainder of the contest to win their sixth state championship in school history and the second title in the last three years. JA finished with a 13-6 overall record and Coach Buffington secured his fourth State Title at JA (2 girls, 2 boys).
